Prevention

There is no way to prevent appendicitis.

Treatment

The standard treatment is to remove the appendix. The surgery, called an appendectomy, should be done as quickly as possible to reduce the risk of ruptured appendix. If the suspicion of appendicitis is very high, the surgeon often recommend removing the appendix although an ultrasound or CT scan can not confirm the diagnosis.

The surgeon’s recommendation to operate reflects the danger of a ruptured appendix, which may endanger life, while an appendectomy is a relatively low risk.

Often, surgeons opting for laparoscopic surgery to remove the appendix because the average length of hospital stay is shorter and recovery is faster when compared with standard surgical access.

Generally, people receive antibiotics intravenously (into a vein) during surgery. It continues to give the antibiotic until the day after surgery. If the appendix ruptures, the person must take antibiotics for a week or more. To allow the digestive system to rest after the surgery, you should not eat or drink anything for 24 hours after the appendectomy. Then, gradually, you can drink small amounts of water, then clear liquids and solid foods until you can follow a normal diet.

Forecast

People who need surgery often remain in the hospital two or three days (if there was a ruptured appendix). Those to who underwent an appendectomy usually recover completely.

In cases of ruptured appendix, the hospital stay is usually more prolonged. Although rare, a person can die of appendicitis if a ruptured appendix spreads infection throughout the abdomen into the blood.
