The menopause and obesity

According to a study conducted in Spain, 58% of menopausal women are overweight or obese, and 42% are within a normal weight. Another important fact is that nearly half smokes or has been a smoker and still consume 38% alcohol.

Data were obtained from the study “menopausal women from Spain” (Mumenesp) presented in Madrid which was based on a sample of women around the menopause_23.022 Spanish territory, with a mean age of 56.7 years, all examined by 160 gynecologists.

Other details that stand out, note that the Spanish reached menopause at 48.7 years, two years before the U.S. and the Nordics. Spanish women, those from the Canaries are those with the highest percentage of early menopause, with 40 years on average. The age of menopause is related to the number of children, age of the first rule and obesity.

What is Menopause?

Defined as “the last menstrual period. The term is generally less useful for simple however, and it is unclear what a woman should wait. the last menstrual period may come after a long period during menstruation may have unexpected and uncertain. Many other symptoms that affect the body and mind, you may have and this can cause disruption of social activities and work. In the women who were not taken by the uterus and ovaries when they were still menstruating regularly, they produce a hysterectomy menstruation vanished, but are not considered menopausal.

Cardiovascular diseases in menopause

To prevent the possible factors that may increase cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women becomes a very important job because the lack of estrogen is lost cardioprotective factor.

1. Why increases cardiovascular risk?
The causes of increased cardiovascular risk in women after menopause are many and are related to the loss of the cardioprotective role of estrogens:

Cholesterol, first enemy
Cholesterol is a substance necessary for the proper functioning of our body. However, it must remain within normal limits, since when is high is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Total cholesterol comprises mainly the LDL-cholesterol (acronym in English of the low density lipoprotein) and HDL-cholesterol (high density lipoprotein).

LDL-cholesterol is considered the “bad” cholesterol because it is he that is deposited inside the arteries, forming a cluster located (atherosclerotic plaques) which gradually begin to narrow the caliber or lumen.

However, HDL-cholesterol is considered the “good” cholesterol, the “garbage” because it is responsible for “cleaning” the walls of the arteries carrying the fat to the liver.

After menopause there is an increase in triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and an undesirable decrease of HDL-cholesterol, thus leading to menopause have worse cholesterol therefore be harmful to the arteries.
