Cirrhosis: Activity and Feeding
Good advice
If excessive drinking and alcohol dependence are the cause of liver disease you should stop drinking immediately and completely. Once alcohol has damaged the liver, liver cells are vulnerable to even small amounts of alcohol.
Seek help from friends and family, and any organizations that specialize in helping people with alcohol problems. Your doctor can help.
Activity
Try to lead an active life. This can be difficult because of tiredness and feeling weak, but it pays to persevere in it. If you develop swelling of the legs may be desirable to keep it elevated while you rest.
Feeding
Make a well balanced diet, rich in proteins (always check with your doctor).
Do not add salt to meals. If your doctor allows, you can use small amounts of salt for cooking. Note that most pre-cooked or canned foods contain enough salt.
In later stages of his illness, and always by the advice of your doctor, you may want to reduce the consumption of protein (primarily meat and fish).
It may take vitamin and mineral supplements.
