Symptoms
Symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea include excessive sleepiness during waking hours. Since loud snoring is a symptom, the person who shares your bed, you can be the first to notice the problem.
There may be headache and dry mouth in the morning, obesity is a common factor, although not all people with sleep apnea are overweight.
Diagnosis
Your doctor will ask if you snore and if you feel excessively sleepy during the day. Will examine and look for any narrowing in the mouth and throat. Also check your neck size because the larger is, the more likely the person has sleep apnea. Also will check blood pressure because people with sleep apnea are more likely to have high blood pressure.
Many people with obstructive sleep apnea have no problem in the nose, throat and mouth. In these cases, the diagnosis can only be confirmed with a sleep study during which the monitor breathing patterns and phases of sleep every night. A daytime study (daytime) of short naps can measure the degree of daytime sleepiness and indicate the severity of the disorder.
