Tennis Elbow (Epicondylitis)
What is tennis elbow?
Tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis is pain over the lateral elbow region probably caused by repeated use of muscles and forced the area.
The muscles that straighten the fingers and wrist originate in a small bony protrusion on the outside of the elbow (epicondyle). In lateral epicondylitis, pain is concentrated around this area and can sometimes spread to the upper arm or down the outside of the forearm. The pain is caused by small tears in the connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone. This tissue becomes irritated and inflamed, causing swelling in the area.
This problem occurs more frequently in people over forty years and affects women more often than men.
Sometimes heals spontaneously but in some cases the pain can last more than five years.
