The Compulsion in The Act of Eating
When speaking of Eating Disorders, commonly think of Anorexia and Bulimia and the unique conditions within this category. However, during recent years because of studies and scientific research has emerged over a table has specific characteristics and is known as the Eating Disorder Compulsive or Binge Eating Disorder.
While this disorder shares the central feature of bulimia: binge eating, it differs in that the person who has it does not include inappropriate compensatory behaviors (purging, self-induced vomiting, intense exercise, fasting, dietary restrictions); and is mostly seen in obese people.
On average, binge episode may occur at least two days a week, at a minimum of six months.
The disorder can occur in both men and women, with slightly higher frequency in females by a ratio 3-2.
International diagnostic manuals report that between 15 and 50% of people suffering from weight loss treatment for binge eating disorders, other authors report rates of approximately 30%. On the other hand, it is known that the appearance and maintenance of binge eating disorder has a direct relationship to dietary restriction or dietary restriction.
What is binge eating?
It is a feeding behavior that has two basic characteristics.
Ingestion of large amounts of food in each episode, which turns out to be significantly higher than the average person would eat in a period of time (eg two hours) and in similar circumstances.
The sense of loss of control (eating quickly, eating without hunger, eating in secret to hide the greed, etc.).
What effect does the binge give?
The immediate emotional consequences of binge eating frustations are deep feelings, anger, anxiety, loneliness, boredom or despair. Most feel very ashamed of their own behavior and therefore tend to keep it hidden for a long time, even years.
The result is a progressive deterioration of the quality of life, as the episodes have a direct impact on physical and psychological health, affecting all areas of the person: individual, family and society. In addition, usually brings with it the weight, which can lead to massive obesity, with all the risks that this entails.
