What Causes Allergies?

When your body is overreacting to things that do not cause problems for most people you have an allergy. These things are called allergens. The body’s overreaction to the allergens is causing the symptoms. See the list of symptoms in the table below. For example, sometimes the term “hay fever” is used to describe the body’s allergic reaction to seasonal allergens in the air such as grass or pollen.

Your doctor may want you to have a skin test for allergies to determine exactly what is causing allergy. In a skin test for allergies to put you in tiny amounts of allergens on the skin to see which ones you react. Once you know which allergens you are allergic, you and your doctor can decide the best course of treatment. Your doctor may also decide to do a blood test such as a radioallergosorbent test (called RAST).

Common allergy symptoms:
* Runny Nose
* Watery eyes
* Itchy nose, eyes and in the hard palate
* Sneezing
* Nasal congestion.
* Pressure in the nose and cheeks
* The ears are thick and sometimes uncover
* Dark circles
* Hives
